A Note On This Month’s Theme, and Why I Don’t Set New Years Resolutions Anymore

Dear Reader,

Happy, happy, happy new year to you and your loved ones. Thank you for reading The Rad Mag and supporting this space for young artists, creatives and activists. You are fabulous (and rad, of course)!

For this month’s theme, “RECLAMATION,” I want to nail the importance of reclaiming all that was taken from you last year. 2020 took a lot away from us. And for many, it took away everything. We all know this; we all experienced and witnessed the pain, loneliness, grief, and loss.

When I think of reclamation, I don’t think of it as taking back something you’ve lost. I see it as making the choice to keep going. To use your pain as fuel for creativity, activism, for spreading light and love.

Reclamation gives you the power to pick up your life whenever you choose. Reclamation opens doors for healing to come your way, and for your story to reach those who need it.

Although a bit dramatized, I feel like I reclaimed my idea of “New Years Resolutions.” Exercise more, meditate everyday, sleep for 8 hours…. And all that.

All these commitments inspired by the glamour of the New Year felt especially fake, after the trainwreck of a year we had. The New Year wasn’t going to make me forget what happened in 2020, it wasn’t going to end the pandemic, it wasn’t going to make my world “normal.”

If 2020 taught me anything, it’s that you have to roll with the punches, and it’s up to you to keep going. So why make resolutions on New Years, when I could make resolutions any day of my life. I can start change now, and I can give myself the power to make change whenever I want. I can start exercising today, I can start meditating now, I can sleep 8 hours a day if I stop being a night owl. So maybe not the last one just yet.

So no more New Years Resolutions for me, nuh-uh. Maybe more like, intention and reflection.

For 2021, my intention and reflection are as follows:

  1. In 2021, I am only investing my energy into relationships that make my heart, body and mind fulfilled and at ease.

  2. Going into 2021, I wish joy and stability for myself.

  3. In 2021, I am dedicated to moving through my fear of abandonment and loneliness.

  4. In 2020, I had to spend lots of time with myself, and as a result, I have come to appreciate my boundless mind, my care for my relationships and the awareness for myself I have worked on.

What intentions allow you to do is what us young people call ~manifesting~. Set an intention, then believe it can come true. I’m not an expert on this, but babe it works.

So go out there (with your mask on) and believe you can change your life whenever you want to. And do it now, and never stop. A New Year does not mean a new you. A new you happens whenever the hell you want it to.

Sending love to you and your loved ones forever and always! Be safe, and thank you for reading. Proud of you!

Much love,

Oona Lulu
